SINGAPORE - The fifth annual mid-Autumn festival by the river goes bigger as activities get extended to Hong Lim Park for the first time this year.
Organised by Singapore Press Holdings' three Chinese newspaper publications, the event aims to promote better understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture and heritage, as well as family togetherness through the wide range of programmes lined up.
Some of the highlights include a 8m waterfall, a lovers' bridge and giant pandas floats.
This year's giant float display will take place from Sept 15 to 30 at the River Promenade, beside Central shopping centre, and depict themes from different Chinese festivals such as the Lunar New Year, Hungry Ghost Festival and Chinese Valentines' Day.
According to The Straits Times, the organisers also commissioned a safari-themed lantern display to welcome the arrival of giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia to Singapore.
Visitors may also look out for lanterns crafted in the shape of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs displayed along River Promenade. In addition, the '9 Sons of Dragon' lantern set piece will also be on display at Hong Lim Park.
There will also be nightly performances by the Guiyang Cultural Troupe from China where they entertain the public at the performance stage by the river.
Other interactive activities include tea appreciation, a Chinese chess competition and a lantern-making competition.
President Tony Tan Keng Yam will be the Guest of Honour at the Festival Light-Up Ceremony on Sept 15.
Admission to the 16-day festival is free. Opening hours from Monday to Thursday is from 5pm to 11pm, and from 3pm to 12am on Friday to Sunday.
